What to Expect With BOTOX®

Initial Consultation
Your journey begins with a personalized consultation with Dr. McIntosh. During this session, he will assess your facial anatomy, discuss your aesthetic goals, and determine if BOTOX® is the appropriate treatment for you. This ensures a customized approach that aligns with your desired outcomes.
Choosing the Right Approach
Dr. McIntosh tailors each BOTOX® treatment to the individual’s unique facial structure and muscle dynamics. By carefully selecting injection sites and dosages, he ensures balanced and natural-looking results that enhance your features without compromising facial expressiveness.
Pre-Operative Preparations
To ensure optimal results and a smooth experience with your BOTOX® treatment, it’s important to prepare ahead of time. Begin by avoiding alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment, as alcohol can increase the likelihood of bruising. You should also stop taking anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, two weeks before your treatment, unless otherwise directed by your physician. Discontinue the use of Retin-A two days before and after the procedure to reduce skin sensitivity. On the day of treatment, be sure to stay well-hydrated and have a light meal beforehand to help minimize the chance of feeling lightheaded during the session.
Treatment Steps
Although BOTOX® is not a surgical procedure, the treatment process is precise and tailored to your unique facial anatomy. During your appointment, Dr. McIntosh will begin by evaluating your facial muscles and discussing your aesthetic goals. The treatment itself involves a series of small injections in targeted areas, such as the forehead, between the brows, or around the eyes. Most sessions take only a few minutes, and discomfort is typically minimal thanks to the use of fine needles and expert technique. You’ll be able to return to your daily activities shortly after the procedure.
Post-Treatment Care
After your BOTOX® injections, it’s important to follow the care instructions to support the best outcome. Avoid lying down for at least four hours after your treatment, and refrain from vigorous exercise for the rest of the day. Do not massage or apply pressure to the treated areas, as this could cause the product to spread to unintended muscles. Mild redness or swelling at the injection sites is normal and typically resolves quickly. Most patients begin to notice results within a few days, with the full effects developing over 7 to 10 days.

What causes wrinkles treated by BOTOX®?
Dynamic wrinkles result from repetitive facial movements like frowning, squinting, or smiling. Over time, these movements create lines and creases in the skin. BOTOX® works by relaxing the underlying muscles, thereby reducing the appearance of these wrinkles.
Will the results be permanent?
No, BOTOX® provides temporary results. The effects typically last 3–6 months, after which muscle activity gradually returns. Regular maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain the desired appearance.
What are the risks involved?
BOTOX® is generally safe when administered by a qualified professional. Potential side effects include bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site. Rarely, patients may experience headaches or drooping eyelids, which are usually temporary.
Is BOTOX® covered by insurance?
BOTOX® treatments for cosmetic purposes are typically not covered by insurance. However, when used for medical conditions like hyperhidrosis, coverage may be available. It’s advisable to consult with your insurance provider for specific details.
